Emergency Dental Care

Dental emergencies can happen when you least expect them, and fast action can make all the difference. Whether you’re dealing with severe tooth pain, a chipped or knocked-out tooth, or another urgent issue, knowing what to do can help protect your smile. If you’re facing a dental emergency, contact us right away—we’re here to help.

Chipped Tooth

A chipped tooth may not seem like a big deal at first, but leaving it untreated can lead to further damage or sensitivity. If you’ve chipped a tooth, try to see a dentist within 2–3 hours to improve the chances of saving it. In the meantime:

  • Control any bleeding by applying gentle pressure to the gums—avoid touching the broken tooth directly.
  • Rinse your mouth with warm water to keep the area clean and reduce the risk of infection.
  • Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek to minimize swelling.
  • Bring the broken piece to your appointment if possible—we may be able to reattach it.

Lost Tooth

A knocked-out tooth is one of the most time-sensitive dental emergencies. The sooner it’s treated, the better the chances of saving it. If this happens:

  • Handle the tooth carefully by the crown (the white part), avoiding the root.
  • Rinse it gently with cool water if dirty—do not scrub or remove any attached tissue.
  • Try to place it back into the socket and hold it in place with a clean cloth or gauze.
  • If reinsertion isn’t possible, keep the tooth moist by storing it in milk, saline, or saliva.

If the injury is severe or involves additional trauma, a hospital visit may also be necessary.

Other Dental Emergencies

Not all dental emergencies involve broken teeth, but that doesn’t make them any less urgent. Call us right away if you’re experiencing:

  • Severe tooth pain that won’t go away
  • A cracked tooth that feels sharp or painful
  • A bitten lip or tongue that won’t stop bleeding (this may require an emergency room visit)
  • An object stuck between your teeth that can’t be safely removed with floss
